Everyone says they want to be happy. But that's much more easily said than done. What does being happy actually mean? And how do you even know when you feel it?
Across the millennia, philosophers have thought long and hard about happiness, and come up with all sorts of different definitions and ideas for how we might live a happier life. Here, Derren explores the history of happiness from classical times until today, when the self-help industry has attempted to claim happiness as its own. His aim is to reclaim happiness for us all, and enable us to appreciate the really good things in life for what they are.
Fascinating, entertaining and revelatory, this is a book for anyone who has ever wondered if there must be more to life...

I read about 5 books a month and I am pretty well-versed in Stoic philosophy. I have also read Bertrand Russel's classic, The Conquest of Happiness so you might say that I was familiar with many of the themes in Derren Brown's book, and that is why, perhaps, I purchased it without expecting too much from it.The book has completely exceeded all my expectations. Sometimes we can read about an issue, or hear a point discussed without fully grasping it. Then someone else makes the same point and we experience a sort of epiphany.
That was the case with me in reading Happy. There was nothing I had not already heard in one way or another, but Brown, through his warmth and humility and exceptional choice of language, introduced me to new insights which had previously escaped me.
Look, there's a reason I read Lucretius and Epictetus and Seneca and Marcus Aurelius. For the last few years I had been traversing, to quote Dante, "una selva oscura, che la via diritta era smarrita." Derren Brown's book is exactly what I needed to read. My mood has changed significantly. Dare I say it? I am happy. Thank you Derren.

Really interesting and helpful book.
It’s great to read a book from someone who has lived a very interesting life and offers us some insight into their thinking.
Self help is limited, even in therapy - you must help others help you.
To be happy, is to play an exhausting role a child has that leads them into tantrums.
I learned from Derren's research how to nor be unhappy, since more or less everything is absolutely fine.
I wasn’t sure what this would be like - a celebrity’s view on philosophy? It is very good, well written and full of insight and well researched information. Self deprecating but he identified my foibles perfectly. Well done Derren.
One of the best books I have ever read. It is absolutely magnificent, extremely well researched, beautifully and wittily written, capable of changing your view of the world. I recommend it with all my heart.
This was a great book to read. I’m interested in stoicism and Browns understanding of it makes it enjoyable to read. This isn’t a self help book. It actually discredits those and doesn’t have a secret formula by which to make yourself happy. I’m re-reading the book just to make sure I haven’t missed anything. 😀
I bought the Audible version on a whim a few days ago after hearing Derren Brown on BBC radio. I didn't know much about him other than his being a magician, but thought it sounded intriguing. I absolutely love this book and am about to listen to it for a second time. It is the perfect antidote to self- help books but at the same time has been helpful to me in my interactions already. Have recommended it to friends already.
